Essays and stories

After building up some experience as an amateur film critic, I took my second Internship at Veronica Superguide. It was there, that I learned how to write in a pleasing way and criticise films and TV shows. Another fun skill I developed during this internship was interviewing famous people and not be overwhelmed by their legacy.

Film reviews I wrote for Entertainmenthoek

It was the highest stakes game of rock, papers, scissors, ever played.

An awesome game was played today.

Bizarre, nerdy, but still entertaining.

Chess normally gets more viewers than this game, but this went totally different.

Did anyone even seem to be bored for a second?

Even though, the game was long and repetitive, it was the most exciting match ever played.

For some people, this game wouldn't be interesting to watch or even play, but even those people were absolutely drawn to this particular match.

Gestures were made, curse words were said, but nobody became any happier or sadder that day.

"Hello, my old friend", said the champion to his competitor before the game started.

"I won't see you ever again after I've beaten you", said the competitor back.

Just before the game started, the two men managed to shake hands.

Karma always seems to get people later on.

Laughing, crying and even yelling was heard, but nobody really knew how to react to his marvellous battle between two old rivals.

Many people didn't dare to look, and covered their eyes most of the time.

Nothing seemed to matter anymore, nothing at all.

Obnoxiously, some people yelled what the players needed to do to win the game, as if they were life long champions.

Painkillers were taking by many, even children, to get through this horrific game.

Questioning about their personas and private lifes, the audience gazed at the game, but nobody knew who these two players were.

"Rest assured", said one of the players, "I am going to beat you any minute now".

Something happened that day, no-one would ever forget what they had witnessed.

That day was truly life changing

"USE THE FORCE", yelled a 6-year-old kid, who did not quite understand was going on, but was still enthusiastic anyways.

Vainly, these two players looked at each other, while the sweat dripped of their foreheads.

While people passed out, because the game became too much for them, the competitor became the new champion.

"Xtc was taking by him!", yelled the former champion, who just came across as a bad loser.

The age of Adaline

Intertextuality is the point where two works of art overlap. In terms of films, it’s where a film overlaps with another work of art, whether that be another film, a work of literature, or another art form. The scene starts when the leading character, named Adaline Bowman, goes to work and watches an old video from the beginning of the twentieth century. The narrator talks about Adaline’s life, and explains why she hasn’t aged a day over 29 for 80 years. Years after (in the 1950’s and 1960’s) people reacted shocked when they see her, because her age and looks do not match. The F.B.I. got to know her story, and wanted to do tests on her against her will. She escaped, and needed to change identity and home over the years to be safe. She says goodbye to her daughter, who ages like a normal person, but stays in contact with her throughout the film.

The master of suspense, and his greatest scenes.

For almost a century Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) is being ranked as one of the most influential directors of all time. He was one of the first directors who dared to experiment with film and had rules for film-making. Those rules are still being followed today. Generations of people have been watching the films made by Alfred Hitchcock, and the films never seem to get out of time. The most famous film made by Hitchcock is ‘Psycho’ (1960). Most of the critics and viewers, therefore, claim that Psycho is best film by Alfred Hitchcock. However, a lot of hardcore Hitchcock fans seem to disagree, because Hitchcock directed two of the most iconic scenes in film history during the making of North By Northwest (1959). That is the reason why the hardcore fans think that the film North By Northwest performs better.
